I didn't mean to let you down is a fairly straight forward song about someone who realises too late what they've lost and why.
Sometimes it's not just one thing, or one big argument that causes a split. It can be an accumulation of things that happen over a period of time that allows a small seed of doubt to creep in and then one day without any reason it's just over. The 'We need to talk' conversation seems to come out of the blue and you're suddenly on the receiving end of a break up.
In the weeks and months that follow you play the situations over and over in your head, analysing conversations, looking for signs you missed. You ask for answers but don't really get them and you're left to pick up the pieces on your own.
Then, when you've exhausted every avenue of thought, the you realise the answer was staring you in the face all along. You simply didn't turn up. You weren't there at the critical moments, and took everything for granted.
You didn't mean not to be, but you didn't see the signs and your other half simply played the waiting game till they were ready to move on. Sorry comes too late.
The song artwork depicts the couple in question still together but looking at life from different perspectives. Maybe both were waiting for the other to get on board with the plan without really knowing what the plan was.
"Maybe time ran out, before we had chance to make it......."
